We know that digital marketers have been doing digital marketing
for the last 120 years. But
the term digital marketing was used about 30 years ago. According to Neil Patel, The origin of digital marketing starts with the invention of Radio which
was invented by Marconi in
1896. After that radio reached the house of most people and it became the best
medium for digital marketing in those days. According to the definition of
digital marketing- ‘digital marketing is any form of marketing products or services
that involve electronic devices. So we can say that using the radio as a medium for marketing is also digital marketing. In fact, using television and phone are considered an offline digital marketing medium.
Origin and evolution of the Internet
Digital Marketing got fueled when the internet comes to exist.
In 1962 American Scientist J.C.R. Lick introduced the galactic network concept.
In this concept, all computers will be connected by only one network and anyone can access any
data from anywhere.
This concept is similar to the concept of today’s internet. At that
time mainframe computer
which was very necessary for computation was very expensive and less in number.
Sharing this computer with many agencies was a good and rational idea.
In 1966, The ARPA of the US means ADVANCED RESEARCH PROJECTS
AGENCY got funding approval from the US government to add all defense networks with ARPA and then ARPANET come to exist.
With the help of ARPANET, all small networks had interconnected and internet bornt. In 1973
this project started which operated in 1983. Initially, this network was used only for
research purposes and universities or Academic work in those decades.
Evolution of digital marketing
The Evolution of Digital Marketing can be traced to 1990 when the first search engine ' Archie Query Form' come to exist. This search engine was used to search the files which are put on the server. before this, any files which existed on the computer had to search manually. 'Archie Query' search engine does not search like google search on the world wide web. Because the world wide web was not so popular that day. So ' Archie Query Form' was the first search engine in the history of digital marketing.
In 1993, the first time an interesting thing happened,
which never happened before, someone used a banner ad. Today we
can see this banner ad on almost every website. But those days nobody
knows it and has not used it. A company AT & T which is a phone service
provider purchased a small rectangular space on a popular
website Hotwired.com. On that rectangular space, an ad was placed with the
text 'Have you ever clicked your mouse right HERE?'
44 % of visitors clicked on that ad and this ad changed the
advertising industry forever. Since
then digital marketing has evolved and in 1996 launches of smaller search
engines like Looksmart, Alexa, and HotBot happened. Search engine Yahoo
adopted this idea by offering advertising space on its homepage. In 2003
Yahoo acquired an overture service for placing ads on its search engine results
which allowed Yahoo to provide advertisers an option to select a bid amount and compete
with other bidders to rank their ads higher. In 1998 google come to exist and launched
its advertising platform called AdWords in 2000. After 2000 many social
media platforms are launched like Linkedin, Facebook, and Twitter.
In
2002 Linkedin, 2004 Facebook, and in 2006 Twitter was launched. 2010 was the decade of
social media which attained penetration worldwide. The revolution of the smartphone completely
changes the digital marketing scenario. The penetration of the
internet also increased dramatically during the period.
The decade of the 1990s was influenced by display advertising, the early part of the decade of 2000 was influenced
by search advertising, and the later part by social media, and the decade
of 2010 was influenced by the mobile revolution.
